Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can I get a longer adapter cord than the standard 20 feet?
Yes. You can purchase additional cord options directly from Global Power. Visit GenerLink or call 800-886-3837 for more information.
2. How do I know if my generator is compatible?
Review this Compatibility List or view How to Choose the Correct Generator.
3. How many amps does the GenerLink support?
The GenerLink device provided by GRU supports generators up to 40 amps, or about 9,600 running watts. The cord comes with a 50-amp plug because generators do not have a 40-amp outlet. Most generators include 20-amp, 30-amp, or 50-amp outlets. The key point to remember is your generator must be 9,600 running watts or smaller for safe operation.
4. What is the installation process?
A GRU technician will visit your home to inspect your electric meter, generator, and meter socket. After inspection, you will be asked to sign a contract agreement. Once the agreement is signed and payment is received, installation will be scheduled.
5. Will GRU show me how to use the GenerLink with my generator?
Yes. At installation, the technician will provide a brief overview and answer questions about connecting your generator. Please note: GRU staff cannot operate or take responsibility for your personal equipment beyond the GenerLink installation.
6. Do I need to own a generator before installing a GenerLink?
It is recommended. Having a generator at the time of installation allows the technician to confirm compatibility. If you purchase a generator later, it must meet the approved compatibility requirements.
7. Can I use GenerLink if I have a solar (PV) system?
Yes, but your PV system must be turned off at the auxiliary disconnect during use. This prevents potential damage to your solar system and your meter.
8. What if I already have a surge protection device?
The existing surge protector will need to be removed so the GenerLink can be installed. GenerLink includes a built-in surge protector.
9. Do I need to hire an electrician to install the GenerLink?
No. GRU technicians handle the installation process.
10. Is there a recurring charge for GenerLink?
No. GenerLink is a one-time purchase. Payment is due in full before installation, and installment plans are not available.
