Biomass Generation

Meeting Gainesville's future energy needs

Biomass Plant

GRU plans to buy power from a new 100-megawatt biomass facility that will be built and owned by American Renewables through its project company Gainesville Renewable Energy Center, LLC. The biomass plant will help meet Gainesville’s energy needs for at least the next three decades.

American Renewables will build, own and operate the plant, and GRU will purchase and own 100 percent of the energy produced. The plant, which will be located on GRU's Deerhaven Generating Station property, will provide renewable energy for the community at a reasonable cost as well as ensure the future reliability of GRU's electric system. Construction is expected to begin in late 2010 and take approximately three years to complete.
