Weather and Your Bill

Back-to-back cold days push heating bills higher

March 01, 2010

This area experienced the longest cold wave in years, with historical lows. Even with a fixed thermostat setting, your system will run longer and harder on very cold days.

Did You Know?

It could require twice as much energy to heat your home than to cool it. With temperatures well below 40 degrees, it is more expensive to heat your home to 68 degrees than to cool it from 90 degrees to 78 degrees.

The Meter

Bills with unusual consumption are reviewed prior to mailing, and GRU routinely re-checks and verifies each reading for accuracy.

How to Read Your Meter

Read the dials from right to left (A-E). If the dial hand is between two numbers, use the lower number.

Take Control

  • Monitor your energy use
  • Set your thermostat to 68 degrees or even lower when you leave home
  • Check your system’s filter
  • Seal drafty areas
  • Wear warm clothing
