GRU Launches Campaign to Help with Utility Bills

Project SHARE donations are tax deductible

February 03, 2010

Gainesville residents can give a special valentine this year with a donation to GRU’s Project SHARE. This program provides assistance to those having difficulty paying their utility bills, with special consideration given to the elderly, handicapped and those in financial hardship due to illness.

Project SHARE is funded through voluntary donations from employees and customers. The Salvation Army, Catholic Charities and Gainesville Community Ministry distribute the money, providing utility assistance ranging from $125 and $200. Last year, GRU received nearly $86,000 in contributions, which helped more than 550 customers.

“The people who are able to get this assistance are truly thankful for the help,” said Jean Gough, director of services at Gainesville Community Ministries. “It makes a difference in their lives.”

Giving is easy. Customers can add their tax-deductible donations to their monthly bill or make a one-time gift. GRU is including a donation card in February’s bill, or customers can sign up online for monthly contributions.
