Prices Drop as Fuel Costs Drop

A typical customer using both electric and natural gas services will pay $5.55 less than in October

December 3, 2008

Entering the holiday season, GRU is lowering prices for electric and natural gas service as reduced operating costs and fuel expenses resulted in the opportunity to help customers save on December bills.

A typical residential electric customer using 1000 kilowatt hours will see a $2.00 price drop in addition to savings from lower natural gas rates in October and November of $3.55 for typical customers using 35 therms; saving a total of $5.55 on monthly bills for customers with both services.

Less volatile and in some cases lower than expected market costs for both coal and natural gas commodities used to generate electricity led GRU to lower the fuel adjustment portion of rates. The fuel adjustment is the regulated rate mechanism utilities use to recover the price they pay for fuels to generate power and are required be passed along to customers at cost.

“Fortunately, we have been able to manage our resources below original projections and be in a position to pass the savings along to customers just in time for the holidays,” GRU General Manager Bob Hunzinger said. “GRU is constantly looking to improve generating plant efficiencies along with optimizing fuel and electricity purchases and sales opportunities to benefit all of our customers.”
