Gainesville vs. Tallahassee Light Bulb Battle

Only a few days remain to move ahead of Tallahassee by purchasing CFL bulbs for $1

The Light Bulb Battle is kicking into high gear this weekend as GRU, Neutral Gator and the University of Florida’s Office of Sustainability hit the streets of Gainesville with $1 compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs to ensure a Gator victory over Tallahassee in the contest to decide which city has the most energy efficient utility customers.

In a competition like no other of its kind, Gainesville Mayor Pegeen Hanrahan issued a challenge to Tallahassee Mayor John Marks in October 2007 to compete through September 30, 2008 and measure success in the following four programs designed to save energy: the number of CFLs distributed, the number of watts installed on solar electric (photovoltaic) systems, the number of customers installing solar hot water heaters and the number of customers upgrading their ceiling or attic insulation.

With only five days of competition remaining, the two cities are in a dead heat with the winner of the CFL contest expected to also win the entire competition. To help Gainesville claim the title, the following businesses will be supplying energy efficient light bulbs for $1 through Tuesday:
