GRU Offers Help to AFN Users

Alachua Free Net is coming to an end, but GRU has a solution to ease the transition for users

Free dialup Internet service from Alachua Free Net (AFN) is coming to an end as of April 30, but current AFN users will have a low cost solution to help them stay connected to the Web from GRU.

For more than a decade, AFN has provided free dialup Internet service to the public. Once used by over 10,000 people to surf the Internet, AFN currently serves only a few hundred residents of Alachua County. The University of Florida generously provided the service through cooperation with volunteers and sponsors, but has made the difficult decision to discontinue AFN.

However, realizing the need for the remaining customers to have a transition to a paid service, Dave Pokorney, a member of the AFN Board of Directors, contacted GRU to help. GRUCom Director Ted Kellermann said, "AFN was a wonderful way to introduce people to the Internet and we are happy to provide a transition for its last remaining users."

GRU is offering any current AFN user a subscription to GRU.Net's dialup for $4.95 per month for one year. After that, the subscription will be the regular price of $11.95 per month. AFN users may take advantage of the transition pricing by calling 352-334-3000 and providing the GRU.Net help desk with their current AFN user ID.
