Due to Gainesville's growing population in the 1970's, the Kanapaha Water Reclamation site was built to serve the northwest and southwest communities. Last year, the capacity was increased from treating 10 million gallons per day to 14.
Most of this reclaimed water acts as the source of GRU's reclaimed water program, which is used for local irrigation. This program reduces the amount of new groundwater that must be pumped from the ground and treated, and decreases the amount of treated wastewater that must be returned to the ground.
