Due to Gainesville's growing population in the 1970's, the Kanapaha Water Reclamation site was built to serve the northwest and southwest communities. In 2003, the capacity was increased from treating 10 million gallons per day to 14.9.

Most of this reclaimed water serves as the source of GRU's reclaimed water program, which is used for local irrigation and aesthetic water features. This program reduces the amount of groundwater that must be pumped from the ground and treated, thus helping to preserve drinking water for our community’s future water supply needs.
