GRU generates the power needed to serve you

GRU owns and operates two power plants, the John R. Kelly Generating Station located in downtown Gainesville, and the Deerhaven Generating Station located near the City of Alachua. Our two generating stations, along with a 1.4 percent ownership in Progress Energy's Crystal River Unit 3, give GRU a combined generation capacity of 610.2 megawatts. This occasionally affords GRU enough capacity to sell to other utilities, maximizing plant efficiency and helping to maintain low electric rates for local customers.

We burn environmentally friendly natural gas, fuel oil and low sulfur coal to produce electricity. Owning our own power source is one of the ways we keep prices down and remain competitive in the utility industry.

Today, as a publicly owned utility, we serve approximately 92,000 customers with a service area of 124.5 square miles. Our electric distribution lines cover 1,412 total circuit miles. Fifty-nine percent of our electric distribution lines are now located underground to enhance the community's beauty and increase reliability.
