Be Water Efficient Year 'Round
When You Save Water, You Save Money
Winter Tips
- Leaking faucets as small as 1/16 inch can drip away one hundred gallons very quickly. Replace worn washers and valve seals.
- Use a pool cover to reduce water evaporation when the pool is not being used.
- Use the appropriate water level when running your washing machine. If you're washing a small load of clothing, adjust the water level to accommodate a small load.
- Time your shower to keep it under five minutes. You can save up to one thousand gallons a month.
Spring Tips
- Landscaping uses up to 50% of all residential water use. Landscape with drought tolerant plants that require less water. You won't need to irrigate your landscaping as much, which will help you save water and money.
- Only irrigate when needed. If the grass does not spring back when you step on it, then watering is needed. Otherwise, it is best for both your lawn and our water supply to wait. Odd numbered addresses should irrigate only on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Even numbered addresses should irrigate only on Thursdays and Sundays.
- Watering midday loses as much as 65% of water to evaporation. Avoid watering between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm daily. This is a water restriction from the St. Johns River Management District.
Summer Tips
- In-ground or automatic sprinkler systems use more water than above ground systems. Measure how long it takes to water 1/2 inch worth of water by placing an empty can on the lawn. Set your timer to only water your lawn for the amount of the time to disperse 1/2 inch of water.
- Turn off the water when brushing your teeth or shaving and save four gallons a minute. That is two hundred gallons a week for a family of four.
- Use a hose nozzle and turn off the water when washing your car and save more than one hundred gallons of water. Try to wash your car on the lawn and not the pavement so excess water can return to the ground and not evaporate.
Fall Tips
- Don't use a hose to clean sidewalks and driveways. Use a broom and save up to eighty gallons of water every time.
- Avoid sprinklers that spray a fine mist which allows water to evaporate easily. Install a drip irrigation system for gardens, trees and shrubs.
- If you wash dishes by hand, avoid running the water continuously; fill one sink with wash water and one with rinse water. That will save two hundred gallons a week for a family of four.
- Check all washing machine hose connections for leaks. Fixing a leak can save five hundred gallons each month.
Year Around Tips
- Turn off the water when brushing your teeth or shaving and save 4 gallons a minute. That is 200 gallons a week for a family of four.
- Run your washing machine and dishwasher only when they are full and you could save 1,000 gallons a month.
- Fix leaks by replacing faucets and toilet flappers as needed. Listen for dripping faucets and toilets that flush themselves. Fixing a leak can save 500 gallons each month.
- Install flow-restrictors or aerators on all faucets.
- Check all washing machine hose connections for leaks. Fixed leaks can save up to 500 gallons of water each month.
- Install rain sensors on irrigation systems to avoid watering during the rain. When rain is not available, your grass needs water: April through August every three to five days.
- Avoid watering on windy days- this will cause water to evaporate more quickly than when there is no wind. When you water on windy days, less water will reach your landscaping and you will need to water longer and use more water than on non-windy days.
- When watering your lawn, make sure the water reaches the areas needed and not the sidewalk, driveway or road.
- Keep the water level in your pool midrange of decorative tile to minimize loss from splashing.
