Proper Disposal of Compact Fluorescent Bulbs

Important information on disposal of bulbs containing mercury, including CFLs

Recycle compact florescent lightbulbsCompact fluorescent lighting presents special disposal considerations. These CFLs contain mercury and should not be thrown out with the regular garbage disposal.

Locations for Recycling:

  • GRU recommends recycling any bulb containing mercury at any of the five Alachua County Rural Collection Centers located across the county or at the Alachua County Hazardous Waste Collection Center. Call (352) 334-0440 for more information or visit their website.
  • George's Hardware at 3424 W University Ave in Gainesville will recycle old CFLs.
  • Hawthorne Ace Hardware at 6910 SE 221st St in Hawthorne also accepts old CFLs for recycling.
  • Indigo: Green Solutions for a Healthy Home, located at 322 SW 4 Ave., also accepts CFLs for recycling when new ones are purchased. When recycling old CFLs, Indigo will also give you a 10-percent discount on a new one!
  • The Lighting Gallery, 2430 NW 6th Street, will accept used CFLs.
  • Zell's Ace Hardware at 3727 W University Ave in Gainesville accepts old CFLs for recycling when customers purchase new CFLs.
