GRU's Rebate Program
Refrigerator Buyback and Recycling Rebate
This rebate is to encourage the removal of older, less efficient secondary refrigerators and freezers that uses more energy.
New refrigerators, on average, use half the electricity of units made prior to 1987. When a new refrigerator or freezer is purchased many of us relocate the older unit into unconditioned space (garage, utility room, etc.) and continue to use it. Placing these units in a hot unconditioned space forces an already inefficient unit to run longer during warmer months. In addition, these units may have other problems that will increase the energy use, such as deteriorating seals, clogged coils or a malfunctioning cooling system.
