Net Metering for Solar PV Systems
Invest in renewable energy
Customers who invest in renewable energy by installing photovoltaic (PV) systems on their homes or businesses can interconnect with the GRU electric system and receive reimbursement for the solar energy they do not use.
Program Offer
Customers will be reimbursed for the excess electricity generated by their PV system, measured in kilowatt hours (kWh). The reimbursement is calculated as follows:
(Average Retail Rate + Fuel Adjustment) x kWh
For example, as of October 1, 2009, the net metering reimbursement rates were:
| Customer Type |
Average Retail Rate |
+ Fuel Adjustment |
= Total Net Metering Rate |
| Residential |
$0.064 |
+ $0.056* |
= $0.12/kWh |
| General Service Non-demand |
$0.081 |
+ $0.056* |
= $0.137/kWh |
| General Service Demand |
$0.042 |
+ $0.056* |
= $0.098/kWh |
| Large Power |
$0.039 |
+ $0.056* |
= $0.095/kWh |
| *May vary based on current fuel adjustment |
Eligibility
- GRU residential or business electric customers
- PV modules must be UL- or ETL-listed
- Must obtain all necessary permits
- Final electrical connection must be performed by a licensed electrical contractor
- Customer must carry and maintain $100,000 in liability insurance
- Systems must comply with current City of Gainesville guidelines governing interconnection with the electric system and any subsequent revisions to these guidelines. Refer to GRU's Energy Delivery Service Guide for details
- Customer must sign an Interconnection Agreement and transfer to GRU all renewable energy credits (RECs) and other environmental attributes from power generated by PV systems
- An additional meter socket (REC meter) must be installed to interconnect with GRU so RECs can be captured
- Program is subject to change without notice
Recommendations
- Customer may submit Solar PV Survey Request Form to have GRU complete a pre-inspection of the site.
- Customer should consider getting a Solar Pathfinder report from contractor that demonstrates that the PV system has a solar window of at least 70 percent and will not be shaded by trees, buildings or other structures
How to Apply
- Install solar PV system that meets GRU requirements
- Submit the following to GRU:
- Upon approval, GRU will install PV and REC meters and allow interconnection of PV system to GRU electric grid
- GRU will credit customer's bill for all excess power generated by the PV system at the prevailing net metering rate
