Heat Recovery Unit Rebate
This rebate is to encourage installation of Heat Recovery Units (HRU). HRUs utilize the wasted heat generated by the central air conditioner to pre-heat water going into your electric water heater.
During normal operation an air conditioner removes heat and humidity from inside the house and discharges it outside. At the same time the water heater is generating heat for domestic hot water use. An HRU recycles some of the discharged heat from the air conditioner and transfers it to the water entering the water heater.
An HRU can save up to 50 percent annually on water heating costs by generating free hot water in the summer. It also helps the air conditioner operate more efficiently by providing an additional place to transfer heat from the house, saving energy with electric water heaters and lowering your electric bill.
The amount of energy saved will depend on such factors as the size of the family, water use habits, efficiency of the air conditioner and air conditioning use.
Eligibility: Must be a GRU residential electric customer
Residential: $155 Rebate
- Must have a central air conditioner and an electric water heater
- Installation must be done by a Florida state licensed Heating, Air Conditioning, Refrigeration and Ventilation (HARV) or mechanical contractor
- Rebate form must be completed and turned in to GRU along with copy of contractor's invoice within 30 days of installation
- Rebate can be used in conjunction with other rebate programs

- Rebates are subject to change without notice
- All rebates are subject to approval and are contingent upon fund availability
- Limit one rebate per location
- This rebate is available for residential locations only
How to Apply for a Rebate
- Contact us at (352) 393-1460 for a rebate form
- Purchase and have licensed contractor install the unit
- Complete and mail the rebate form along with copy of contractor's invoice to: PO Box 147117 Station A114 Gainesville, FL 32614
- Rebate will be issued in the form of a check or a credit on your GRU utility bill
- Please allow 2 - 4 weeks for processing
