GRU generates the power needed to serve you

GRU owns and operates two power plants, the John R. Kelly Generating Station located in downtown Gainesville, and the Deerhaven Generating Station located near the city of Alachua. Our two generating stations, along with a 1.4 percent ownership in Florida Power Corporation's Crystal River Generating Unit Three, give GRU a combined generation capacity of 612 megawatts. This affords GRU enough capacity to sell to other utilities, maximizing plant efficiency and helping to maintain low electric rates for local customers.

We burn environmentally friendly natural gas, fuel oil and low sulfur coal to produce electricity. Owning our own power source is one of the ways we keep prices down and remain competitive in the utility industry.

Today, as a publicly owned utility, we serve almost 80,000 customers with a service area of 130 square miles. Fifty-two percent of our electric distribution lines, which cover 1,269 total circuit miles, are now located underground to enhance the community's beauty and increase electric reliability.
