Generating power while sustaining the environment

The 429-MW* Deerhaven Generating Station is GRU's largest power plant. Deerhaven began commercial operation in 1972 with Unit One, a natural gas or oil fired generating unit. One year later, GRU negotiated a permanent tie into the state electric grid through the Florida Power Corporation, which allows us to buy and sell excess power. In 1981, Unit Two was constructed becoming the first municipally owned coal burning electric generating unit in the state.

Deerhaven is one of Florida's most efficient and economical power generating stations, partially due to the use of coal. The state designated the site as a "Stewardship Forest" for good stewardship of the land and demonstrating multiple use practices in natural resource management. The site at Deerhaven is 3,474 acres and is home to a large variety of plants and animals. To protect the natural habitat and our native groundwater, Deerhaven is a "zero discharge" plant. Process waste is reclaimed on site, and natural and artificial materials line all plant areas to protect groundwater. Groundwater monitoring wells are regularly sampled to ensure the safety of the aquifer. GRU also monitors and controls air emissions.
