Customers can assist with power restoration by inspecting their electric equipment to determine whether their home or business is ready to receive power. Damaged equipment should be repaired prior to power being restored.
Customer Electric Equipment
The exterior portion of a home's electric wiring system consists of the meter box and the weatherhead or riser. Customers are responsible for repairs to these items. GRU cannot work on home wiring systems.
Weatherhead: The metal pipe above your electric meter (for overhead electric service) where the power lines connect to your home or business
Riser: The metal or plastic pipe below your meter (for underground electric service) where the power lines connect to your home or business
Meter Box: The box that surrounds the meter
Performing a Visual Inspection
Be careful not to touch any electrical equipment when inspecting your electric equipment!
- Look at the weatherhead or riser, which includes the pipes and wiring coming into and out of the meter box.
- If the weatherhead or riser appears bent or loose, call an electrician to make a closer inspection and any repairs.
- Inspect the meter box for damage. If the box surrounding the meter is damaged, you will need to call a licensed electrician to make repairs. If there is damage to the electric meter itself, a GRU crew will repair or replace it.
