Project Habitat®
The right-of-way management program, Project Habitat®, is one way we demonstrate environmental stewardship while maintaining reliable utility service
What is Project Habitat®?
- A program that encourages utility companies to manage their rights-of-way
(ROW) to help preserve and enhance wildlife habitats
- A ROW is land used by utilities for transmitting electric and other
services to customers
- The principal goal is to remove only those plants or vegetation that
may cause power interruptions or personal injury, therefore removing
only tall species that can interfere with overhead power lines
- The program uses herbicides that preserve natural low-growing species
- Part of the program involves developing a demonstration ROW area with
interpretive signs and walking tours, including bluebird boxes and
other wildlife enhancements
