PM 2.5 Monitor is equipment that intakes ambient air (i.e., the air we are exposed to) at a known rate for a period of 24 hours and captures particulate matter (PM) less than 2.5 microns in diameter on a filter. The filter is sent to a laboratory where it is weighed. The ambient concentration of particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in diameter can then be determined in micrograms per cubic meter.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets national limits on the levels of certain pollutants, including PM 2.5, to help protect public health and welfare. The measured concentrations are compared with the EPA or state standards to ensure the public is protected. If standards are exceeded, then states must implement programs to reduce pollutants to protective levels.
