Cities for Climate Protection Campaign

Local involvement in international efforts for cleaner air

The City of Gainesville supports cost-effective ways to meaningfully reduce the emission of contaminants into the atmosphere that are detrimental to the local, regional and global environment.

Local governments not only can affect the air emissions from government operations, but also can provide meaningful leadership and information to assist citizens in reducing the air emissions stemming from their own activities.

The Cities for Climate Protection was established by a United Nations summit of municipal leaders in 1993 to provide a planning framework for greenhouse gas reduction and strategic energy management. The Cities for Climate Protection Campaign is sponsored by the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives and by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

In order to support and participate in the Cities for Climate Protection Campaign, the City of Gainesville is undertaking the following five initiatives within the next three years:

  • Establish an inventory and forecast for key sources of greenhouse gases in the City’s operations and the community
  • Set a cost-effective, feasible and meaningful greenhouse gas emissions goal that balances multiple air emissions criteria, considers regional and global implications, and takes into account achievements attained to date
  • Develop and adopt a local greenhouse gas action plan to achieve those reductions
  • Begin implementation of the plan
  • Monitor and report on greenhouse gas emissions and implement actions and measures
