Chapman's Pond & Nature Trails History
- Area occupied by human cultures for the past 5,000 years
- 16th century - Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto passed through on his journey north.
- 17th and 18th centuries - area included several Spanish missions attempting to convert Potano Indians.
- Late 18th century - Potano tribes displaced by Seminole Indians.
- During 18th century - The famed naturalist, William Bartram, wrote about the area's beauty and nature.
- Late 19th century - Naturalist and ornithologist, Frank M. Chapman (the park's namesake), provided us with a written record of the animals that occupied this area in the previous 200 years.
- Today - GRU has created a beautiful passive recreation park for the community that includes shallow ponds, streams, waterfalls and fountains.
- To maintain this park, GRU recycles reclaimed water from the Kanapaha Water Reclamation Facility.
- Chapman's Pond was added to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Great Florida Birding Trail in 2002.
